When Gary was in Viet Nam I used to send him tapes and I would sit on Mrs. Johnson's back step and sing "I sit alone on your doorstep". This CD has great sentimental memories for our family. |

| Do you have any comments? | Just wanted to send a message to Marvin in saying "Job well done". In case you don't remember my name, I'm the drummer that played with STAGES at Zephyr Cove and Ky. Cove. I'm now playing with the group UNLIMITED at Billy's Place (26th and Broadway) every Sunday night.
In reading the article on your retirement, I can say you have lived a very good life. Making money by doing what you love. I've always wanted to do my music full-time. Very much like you, I started at age 3. Got into the school band in grade school. Took private lessons from UK's percussion instructor Dave Davenport. Received a music scholarship from UL School of Music. Studied under James Rago (Louisville Orchestra Timpanist) and later opened for a host of national recording R&B, Funk, Contemporary Jazz artist. My biggest regret is that I didn't leave Kentucky to follow my dream.
You have made a positive and historical impact on the entertainment industry locally and nationally. May your days of retirement be filled with as much joy and pleasure as you've brought to those around you. GOD Bless you Marvin and I know I'll see you sometime in MOM'S. Beverly, I've never had the opportunity to meet you but I know you must be a hell of a woman to marry a musician. Especially Marvin Thank you for being with him all those years and for giving the world Max, Mark and Margot. Three of the most beautiful spirited people I've ever met.
Enjoy!!

I adore "I belong to nobody".It's perfect.
Thanks guys, for giving me the opportunity to experience the realm of rock and roll at such an early age. I idolized you and emulated you, and eventually became part of the Louisville scene because of you. My sincere thanks goes to Mr. Wayne Young for showing me, and teaching me the way.
Sitting here listening to "I Belong to Nobody" brings a rush of memories that I can't even put into words. To show what a small world it is, here in Florida I met a former student of a friend of mine named Peyote Perryman, whose dad, Will Perryman, was in the Louisville group, Alphabetic Order. Can you believe that? I can't wait to order some of the re-released music. What a treat this has been. Wayne, if you see your brother Jerry, who I haven't seen in about 28 years, tell him I said hello. I THINK he might remember me.
Hey Marvin, We've moved again (for the last time) down to Franklin, Tennessee, just south of Nashville. You need to get down here cause these guys don't know how to play drums. After all, you are "The Man"!
good page, but no story on jimmy hofa,oh well se la vie
marvo, how this collaboration of ours ever got this far i will never know.however i DO know this! from the time i was a 15 year old "student", secretly studying at your feet at practically every local teen club SOUL INC. played, trying to mentally capture the essence of your technique, and later tying to replicate the licks of your "simple" sounding drumming, did i realize you had the polyrhythmic "MIDAS TOUCH" so many of us drummers strive for! and to realize again (years later, after sharing many conversations and beers, etc.) that for you it was not something that you consciously attempted to perfect, but something you effortlessly "gave birth" to each time you burst forth with one of those peferctly timed polyrhthmic, sequences humbled me. sorry if i sound so sappy, but that is how you make me feel when i listen to the "simple elegance" with which you command your instrument. I'm still trying! By the the way, do you think you could sit in for me again at Dandy Jim's on the 30th of February. Time is of the essence!!! See you at the next JJ planning meeting.
marvin: just stopped by to say hello and how ARE you? am sure that since 9/11, we're all thinking about one another more. take care.
Hi Marvin, thought I'd sign in at work and see your sight, Darrell says HI
What happened to the "14 By Request" cd? I was looking forward to that.
When I was a kid, Wayne and Marvin were my IDOLS. Now we're a few years older and Wayne and Marvin are stiil my IDOLS. You guy's made me want to be in a band and I joined a band, 30 years later I'm still in a band trying to be as cool as you guy's. Another thing I learned from you guy's was how to be a good human being and a great DAD. Good luck always and GOD BLESS Pat Bare4is CRAZY TRAIN/ PAGLINA
I was looking for some good blues and or jazz for my background music on web sites. A friend sent me this addy and I Like what I hear. My brother-in-law's use to have some rockin bands in the 60's/70's the best one was Rhythm Kings they won several battle of the bands in the ArkLaTex. I wont turn this into a book, just figured that being a OLD rocker myself I would sigh your book. good luck to all of u!!
As a former Bass Player with Soul,Inc. I must say this brings back great memories. I would love to here from the old gang. Please email me.
Marvin, I forgot how good you guys really were. It was great listening and going back to some really great memories.I was surprised to see my old room mate Jimmy Orten on your web site. Thanks for bringing "back" the Oxfords to Gear Fab Records. Tell all the guys i said "hey".
What a great band.......listened to them for many hours back in the sixties and early 70's.
I wrote and recorded the collector hit "Hey Conductor' in 1967. It's just been re-released with some never befotre released sides on Bachus Archives. Write me. Also visit the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. I'd love to hear your music.
i like your music even though it sounds new :)) ...but i like the original version of I'm a little mixed up better, but the b-side on that single You Can't Get Kissed (When You Twist) is the mutha of all rock 'n' roll songs :) hey can i have cosmo's autograph ??! ;) rock on
Marvin, Note I've changed my E-Mail address. Is ther any way I might get even a cassette copy of "Been Down So Long" and "Get Right With Your Man"? I would REALLY love to hear them again, Sonny
I'M THE BEST FRIEND OF TARA SETTLE JIM SETTLES DAUGHTER. gREAT JOB ON THE ALBUMS.

I have to say that Soul Inc. and Elysian Field both kick ass!!! Mom's is also a great place to go to, to get your music. Also, I would like to thank Frank Bugbee for teaching me the guitar, your really good at it, lesson at 4:00 right on Saturdays? Also, if you have any questions for me about movies, like what to see or rent whatever, just ask me or Ian we'll be glad to help.
Great site, and great music! From that picture in 1966, I guess we're about the same age! Keep on with the good sounds, and thanks for including my link. Rick Allen
Soul Inc., You guys made me so happy and I love the way I felt ~~~~~~ I just love your albums !!! Just KEWL !! WOW,,wish that I could start working on Soul Inc. Korean fanclub asap !! I thank you for the nasty garagez~~~~~

A few weeks ago I bought volumes 1&2. Great stuff!!! Just one question: can anybody give me recording dates/places?? Thanx in advance! BTW Great site as well!!
Hey, I heard that song Sixty miles high on the radio a while back and I am just so happy I was able to listen to a realclip of it on this page, I love it, and I am definitely going to check out those Cd's . Groove on
You guys rock! Our band spent many a hapless night playing after you in some venue here or there around Louisville. And when we weren't playing we were standing for hours in front of your stage copping licks like peons at the feet of gods...well maybe not gods, but what did we know. Now it's over 30 years later and it all still sounds fresh. I know, I mix sound for television shows. No, not the news. Shows like Woodstock '99, Rockfest, and the WHO Live webcast from Las Vegas. So keep it up. With all the trash I have to listen to you guys are a welcome relief. Let's hear some more.
Just a quick Hello to Wayne. How you doing ? Noticed a picture of a release we had during the brief time I sang with you. I loved that time of my life. Good Luck and keep rockin'
Having grown up in the Louisville area listening to the great WAKY and WKLO, I was elated to find this website and to learn about the new Louisville Series CDs now available. Hearing these CDs reminds me that Louisville was truly blessed with some of the most talented, creative, and innovative musicians anywhere. I've always wondered what kept our guys from really making it in the big-time. Keep up the great work...the memories that result are priceless. A Louisville Fan
recognize the last name?yes i'm the youngest brother of Jim Settle. What a brother! Thanks bro for all the lessons in life you've taught me. Thanks for the music and memories. love ya brother Phil

I really like this page. It is interesting. Hope you can help us find a bass player. Thank-you
Hey to Marvin, Wayne and the gang. Seeing the Soul Inc. CD notices shure brought back some memories.

Elysian Field kicks just as hard today as it did in the 1960's. The ledgendary band takes you thru the whole history of their band and shows how they evolved from Soul Inc.
Elysian Field rides again! Another killer release from the boys from Louisville, KY... a lot harder-edged and even punk-like rock and roll from the early 70's... ahead of their time... If you like Soul, Inc., you'll LOVE Elysian Field... it's Maxwell, Settle and Bugbee at their best!
I listened to these guys when they came to play in my hometown and was really impressed by their professionalism. I was 16 years old. Now I'm impressed with all the songs I didn't hear them play, but wish I had. Look up psychedelic in the dictionary..Soul, Inc's picture should be there!
i remember very well all the groups from lou.me and chi went to the same school togetherjr. high we had the same science teacher . all i can say is those were the days. i still see some the guys but haven't talked to chi since scool. i wish you all the best thanks for the memories. jim
Marvin,I bought a sitar from you-way back when and even did a light show for you and Elysian Field (with over head projectors-FLUIDS MAN)way back when. I remember seeing you all at the teen clubs and telling my cousin, Rick Manningly about you all-so he'd check you all out. It's great that you and Wayne and all the rest are putting it out for all of us to hear again- thanks for taking me back "to way back when",again---see you at the shop---Mike Owens and the rest us from Leslie's Motel
neat history. I will be back
Well I am kind of partial to one of the members of the group because I call Jim Settle, Uncle Jimmy and have for 28 years. I am so happy for him. But trust me when I say he will be hearing from me about the pics (haha.) So I am very proud to call him Uncle and it warms my heart (and his) to know that he still has fans everywhere.
Nice memories! How about some more local groups from the same time frame?
MEMORIES, MEMORIES , MEMORIES! ELYSIAN FIELD ERA WAS MY FAVORITE. MICELI COULD MAKE IT SOUND LIKE REAL GROOOOOOVY MAN! LOL!
I've received several email wanting to know what I've been doing over the years. I ended up in the TV business - I direct Motor Sport events for ESPN, Speedvision and Fox - My wife and I own a video production company here in Louisville. It's called MississHippie Productions. It's funny, I went from a nick-name of Mabel to Hippie because of my hair and I was thought it was that long. As for music, we have put together a band that plays at our church (Summit Heights United Methodist) for every 5th Sunday worship service - we also play alot of the stuff that we did. As for family, I have six kids - ages 14, 17, 19, 22, 25, 27 and a 1 yr old grand-baby - and I am really enjoying life!
I just bought a copy of the Vol 1 CD at C's Records over on wide wide Dixie Highway. What a blast! I was born in 68 & who knows maybe you guys put them in the mood. Thanks.
Hi Wayne, Jimmie, Marv - boy does the site bring back memories. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to be a part of the band. Wayne, Wes, Chi, Frank - what a great experience and I'm still playing music a lot of years later.
Hey guys! Thank you so much for letting me be a part of the Grand Dads and the new Soul, Inc. recordings! I really enjoy playing with all you guys- Let's do it again- real soon!!! ROD
Hey guys! Thank you so much for letting me be a part of the Grand Dads and the new Soul, Inc. recordings! Ireally enjoy playing with all you guys- Let's do it again- real soon!!! ROD
Hi there! Is the new compilation out yet? Can you guys ship internationally? I checked out ear x-tacy's Website, and couldn't find any info on int'l shipping. Are you guys ever going to pay a visit to Mainz??? If so, maybe I'll see you there!!! Yours truly, Jennifer (a/k/a "Cecilia of Louisville")
Roger always sends me his releases, and Soul Inc. has really impressed me. I publish my own mag dedicated to 60s/70s garage/psych bands and will cover the CD in a coming issue. In December's Record Collector mag there'll also be a review -- I'm in the process of writing it now. Mojo, London
This music is great and thanks to Marvin and his band for making it,and thanks to Allen Martin studios for still having the tapes. It was music like this that stands the test of time. And this music has.It is as fresh today as it was back in the 60's.Can't wait for vol.@ and all the louisville music releases.
REMEMBER THE GOGO ROOM IN PINEHILLS?
Im a former Bass Player of SOUL,INC. and I just want to say that the Louisville Fans are the best and that the release of this CD brought back great memories. Im looking forward to the release of volumeII. Thanks for the memories. Wes Scott
I heard the interview on WHAS while driving through the hills of West Virginia on my way to assess hurricane damage on the east coast. I wrote down the URL and just found it today. I felt great to hear the story of Soul Inc. one more time. As the drummer for the Louisville Epics in the early 60s I got that old urge all over again. Ha! I'm still on the road- but wish I was still playing drums instead of chasing storms.I'll be getting your CD when I get back home to Louisville. It'll be great company for me when I'm traveling. Rock and Roll Forever!! Ric Charles Vitiello
Marvin, Frank, Wayne, Jimmy & gang.....congrats on the new CD release! Soul Inc & Elysian Field are two of the finest bands ever. Along with The Rugbys, Oxfords, Exiles, Steve & Terry/NRBQ....you changed our lives, gave us a musical vision, & taught us how to use a Fuzz Tone...HAVE MERCY!!!! God bless y'all...thanks for the inspiration! This really lifts my spirit.....yeeeaaahhh!!! Greg Martin
Well, I am driving outta Kentuckiana today (9/19/99)and heard Marvin on 84WHAS, What a thrill. As a garage band bass player from Valley Ststion and later member of The Futuras, and The Lynchmen, and even a short lived band with Dutch whom I see here (Don't rememeber the name unless but we had guitar player that claimed to have played with The Syndicate of Sound), we followed Soul Inc around the area (and later EF as well). Always promised to me a great dance and party. I sang along with I belong to nobody. I rememeber a song (but not the name) that Soul played as a break song. We all copied it too. I have ordered the CD and will order more. Keep 'em comin'! How 'bout an email update on Grand Dads Appearances? Jim Hicks Nashville

I just finished listening to Soul Inc., Volume 1, for the fifth time. This compilation really rocks. I hope Soul Inc. makes some personal appearances before I go to the grave!!!

Just bought your new CD. Brings back great memories of your lively performances in Lebanon, KY. Looking forward to Vol. 2 next month.

Soul Inc. was "THE PIONEER BAND" in Louisville!! They bridged the gap between 50's R&B greats like the Falcons and the late 60's psychedelic blues of the Cream and with each, adding their own blend of local soul. Like the Rolling Stones, they were the perfect blend of garage band guts, gifted musicianship, attitude, style, talent, individualism… and whatever that other magic is that just makes seeing them perform a wonderful and powerful experience. Who else could have laid the Beatles Daytripper on top of the driving rhythm of the Cream's Sunshine of Your Love to came up with the awesome version they did. Throw in a smoke show with strobes, frenetic Frank on guitar, Wayne and Jimmy and Marvin hammering that driving, punching, beat straight at you, and you've got one censored of a musical experience for anyone, but it was especially inspiring for this young budding guitar player. Thanks for the re-issue, and thanks for all you gave to your audiences.

Hi, I enjoyed this site. It brought back a lot of memories. I followed this band through the years. They were an inspiration to many of us that aspired to play as they did. I am glad to hear about the group returning to the studio. Is that the new Charcoal Soul album? I heard a remake of I Belong to Nobody on WFPK just recently. I enjoyed it. I'll keep my eyes open, who knows we might see them on stage again. Best of luck. Phil

I am just as happy as can be that my musical mentors have a new CD out and more coming. It has been an extreme pleasure to be involved in this project. Gear Fab Records has done a wonderful job and the great thing is all my musicial mentors still kick. If it had not been for these guys, I would have never picked up a guitar or sang......censored...why am I so happy ? Maybe I should blame them..... Folks, this is LOUISVILLE MUSIC at it's best don't miss out........

Dear Marvin, You have truely outdone yourself this time, son! Would we have ever imagined that a fella like yourself could actually create an electronic cyber space SHRINE for your self, and make people aware of some real good music that was happening during that groovey era! I think you are in order for some fresh ramrods. What da ya think? Best Regards, Stu Dog Doo

Groovy is the word. I remember when that last Elysian Field picture (the colored one) was taken. That pic.was taken by a guy who was sort of a rodie for the band i was with at the time.I dont remember how many groups were in that show but anyway that picture had been in a box for many years i am glad it found a home. Dutch

Great site and Great sounds I will have to add this latest cd to my louisville collection. If only they would release another 14by request or just reissue the first records. Soul Inc will always be STRONGER THAN DIRT. Dutch Kirchner

Like almost everyone else has said...Soul Inc. turned me on. They were playing real music and in a professional way. The thing about all of the guys was, they were real, we could talk to them and touch them. they were the ROCK GODS of this area. Listen to the music and you will see they were inventors. Soul Inc. did some really krazy stuff during not so crazy times. Soul Inc. is memories and for anybody who saw them at Headliners a few weeks ago know that the magic is still there. What I read in the Louisville paper I would say Mr. Maxwell and Mr. Amick deserve high praise for their devotion to Louisvlle music and the scene..a million thank yous....

Marvin, Thanks for putting me on to your site. Kudos to your webmaster. Call it what you will; "Louisville" sound or whatever. There's no denying, them boys (Jimmy, Marvin, Frank and now Eddie and Wayne are from Indidna. How do you spell soul? HOOSIER! Stratocastorally yours, Denny Inzer

One summer evening in 1965 I saw Soul Inc. at Hi-Li on the Outer Loop. Being an aspiring musician and a blank canvas at the time, I was casting about for inspiration. My life changed the moment you guys struck the opening chord. I hoped someday to be as collectively cool and as musically sophisticated as Soul Inc., (and to get a pair of paisley pants just like Jimmy Settles wore that night).I've been playing music now for 35 "ought years"; I can't say I've ever become as cool, but I did find a pair of paisley trousers in San Fransisco last October. My daughter thinks they're way cool! Seriously: thank you Marvin, Wayne, Frank and Jimmy for some wonderful memories, profound inspiration and great music!!

Even us McNicols dig the Soul Inc., especially when you have a killer cat named Wayne Young on lead guitar, Hey Wayne, by the way, when are you gonna go out with my mom again? you know you're like the best fella for her =). Looks like we have a good gig going here guys, don't scare to many japanese cult kids now, be good.... Bill McNicol (Funkadelic)

A tip from Timothy L. Tyler brought me to this web site. The wed site took me back to the days of Ewing Lane in Jeff. It's great to here that there still great music coming from the Louisville area. What ever happened to Janie Moss? A lot of who grew up in and around Louisville in the mid 60's had some great bands to listen too and see. Thanks to stations like WAKY and jocks like Tim we always knew what was happening musicly in the area. KEEP JAMMIN' Dave

What a great find! One of the great "undiscovered" group may finally get the audience they deserved long ago. Their music was ageless in the 60's and the 90's are proving the depth of their music, the depth of their white "soul" even here in the 90's. Discoveries like this make the internet truly a great thing.

It's great to see these guys rockin' again! I saw Elysian Field in 1968, changed my life forever! Man, the psychedelic lights, Frank Bugbee's guitar, & Marvin's drumming blew my mind! If my memory serves me well, WKLO disc Jockey Bill Bailey sang a psychedelic version of 'Won't you Come Home Bill Bailey' that night. Oh yeah, 'Kind Of A Man' was #1 this particular week, so the boys were on fire. By the way, I also loved Soul Inc., one of Kentucky's finest rock n' roll bands ever. Keep rockin' guys, there's always Geritol. Peace & love, Greg Martin/ The Kentucky HeadHunters

Marvin makes the SF Chronicle! I was around Louisville(my hometown-with the bands "The Outcastes, Exit, etc) when Marvin put together the toilet seat guitar, so when I saw that a Marvin Maxwell was selling toilet seats lids made from guitars I figure it had to be my old buddy. He sold me my first bass. Actually, # 1 & 2. Trying to reach him to say hello, so Marvin, if you see this drop an e-line. Grand-dads sounds like a great project. My last country band up north before my recent move to SF was called "Still Kickin'" with much of the same sentiments.
